4x4 Safari: Self-drive safari
Expedition
Vehicle Preparation & Safaris in East & Southern Africa
This
site contains lots of vehicle specific information on 4x4 preparation
for overland expeditions in East African and Southern African environments.
Currently I drive a modified UK spec Toyota
4Runner (also known as the Toyota
Hilux Surf) with the 3 litre Turbo Diesel engine (1KZ-T / 1KZ-TE).
A few bolt-on mods will turn this into a vehicle fit for any overland
adventure! Most of the mods (and any problems I experienced or could
have experienced) are descibed in the following pages. If you
have any questions please do not hesitate to email
me.

Zebra striped 4x4 at home in Kenya.
My
trips (available under Expeditions)
have taken me from Isiolo in Kenya through to the Aberdares;
Amboseli; Bagamoyo; Chobe; Dar es Salaam; Ngorongoro; Maasai Mara;
Mombasa; Serengeti; Zanzibar; Stewart Gore-Brown's "Shiwa N'gandu";
Kapishya Hot Springs; Kruger; the magnificent Victoria Falls and
Hwange National Park before arriving at our own "Africa House"
in Bulawayo close to the Matopas.

NGORONGORO,
Tanzania: Traffic jam in the Crater. The road from
Arusha to the NCA is pretty damned good - however as soon as
you get into the NCA the roads fall apart. The crater is great
but very expensive: 50USDpp plus a 200USD crater entry fee.

MALAWI: Bridge crossing. Note
the solar panel on the roof for running the cooler and charging
a camp light. IPF lights on the roof for night driving (not particularly
recomended, night driving that is) and a full length roof rack
perfect for a roof tent and all the assorted crap that my wife
refused to leave home without!

NANYUKI, Kenya:
Crossing the Equator going north
at Nanyuki. The spare was off being repaired and since then I've
bought another two: they usually live on the roofrack. Check the
British and Zimbabwean number plates.
The
corrugations shook loose the pins from two bow shackles (one fore
and one aft), a retaining bolt on the hi-lift, broke the drop
arm on the rear sway bar and caused my only flat tyre of the journey.
Although you can't really see it, I've extended the front skid
plate all the way from the bullbar back to the back end of the
sump. Plus I've emoved both anti-sway bars - can't tell the difference
myself!
